MODULAR is an multi-sensory installation and performance where projections, music and dance interact with each other in real-time. The installation showcases the relationship between a human dancer and a virtual dance partner in the form of particles.
My aim was to conduct a symbiotic flow between these three art forms, allowing them to create each other: sound data and dance movement generate the initial visuals. Every movement of the dancer affects these behaviour of these visuals and pushes the sound spatially through the room. The dancer, in turn is inspired to improvise with the music and the visuals as her virtual dance partner.
The story showcases a relationship between a human dancer and a virtual dance partner in the form of particles. They emerge, interact with each other and morph into one. Anxiety builds as the human dancer is unable to detach from the virtual dancer. They start to fight. The human dancer finally manages to throw off the virtual dancer.
After each performance, the installation is open to the audience to interact and improvise in their own way, creating a fun immersive experience that provides freedom, joy and self expression. The audience could visit this piece on a number of occasions and the experience would never be the same.
My artistic interest lies in creating multi-sensory experiences in real-time by directing each art form, their relationships and the overall story as well as its emotional interpretation.
Our next goal is to secure funding to craft a 30 min performance in a volumetric cube space so the dancer and audience is entirely immersed in sound and projections.
